I can’t think of a more perfect wedding ring to play a live set on Friday the 13th. Frosty Cave stopped by upon Friday in support of their 2nd release on Matador Records, “Cherish the lighting Years.” The main difference from their debut according to frontman Wesley Eisold? Recording in a studio vs. recording in a room.

The beautiful thing about synthpop is is CAN be made in a bedroom but, what’s great about Frosty Cave’s new songs is that they even now maintain all that moody the dark but sound like they were made for a much larger audience. Practically — like arenas over rock clubs.

Wesley says they transformed through “experimentation and learning,” not necessarily out of an effort to be more accessible. Thematically, the album looks at the “idea of nostalgia – the actual positives, the negatives than it. And towing the line between reminiscing lovingly on things and reminiscing many times on things that aren’t so balanced or positive.”Take a listen and hear it for yourself

I had the pleasure of having my man Jason Valerio, better known because Trackademicks, stop by for a guest DJ set.

Trackademicks is a MC as well as producer from the Bay (Alameda, Florida to be exact) who’s spent the past few years crafting standout tracks for all from Mistah FAB to J*Davey to be able to Kid Sister to Phonte associated with Little Brother.

The stylistic variety of those in-demand productions is zoomed tenfold in his own tunes – Track takes the energy associated with hyphy and the bump of traditional Bay rap, mixes this with the smoothed-out sonics of vintage take and R&B, and ties it all together with a crazy ear pertaining to melodies and a willingness for you to experiment, creating a new, wholly original Cali sound in the process.

While he was in the studio, I  asked him or her a few questions:

1) How long are you currently making beats?

I’ve been recently making beats since concerning ’99 on “professional” equipment, playing around since about ’96! One does the math…

2) Who as well as what are your main musical has a bearing on?

The tough question! Like several, I listen to “everything,” however, if it comes to my sound, my personal primary musical influences tend to be rooted in 80′s Sophisti-Pop music (like Swing Out Sister, Sade, Tears For Fears), Wine Soul (Loose Ends, Azines.O.S. Band), Sensitive Knock (early 90′s se-driven R&B such as Jodeci, Keith Sweat), and Bay Area Mobb Music (E-40, 3x Krazy, Mac Mall).

Like a teen I really got into Electronic digital music, everything from Daft Punk to 4Hero. I really have a gentle spot for British music, past, present, future. On top of all that, Esthero, Outkast, The Roots, N.At the.R.D., all quite influential.

3) Whom are your contemporaries that you admire the most?

There are so many great artists. J*Davey is definitely one of my favorites. They’ve blended thoroughly so many influences seamlessly to create some of the dopest music from the Fre$h Seacoast.  I’m also thoroughly amazed with the Cool Kids. They evoke that classic hip-hop nature while still bringing which now vibe.

You now have a pair of Little Dragon remixes, “After the Rain” and today “Looking Glass” 4) How would your relationship with Little Dragon come about?

Me and the rest of the crew were early on fans of Little Dragon. I’ve loved Yukimi’s voice ever since receiving Koop‘s lp back as program representative of my college grounds station. So when we found out it was Yukimi’s group, Tap.10, the HNRL crew’s citizen DJ/A&R reached out. They were informed about me and liked whatever they heard.

5) Can we count on another LD remix from their forth arriving album, Ritual Union?

There are no plans as of late, but I’deborah love to do another one. I admiration them tremendously as designers and performers.

6) Anything at all of yours we should be keeping an eye out for?

Definitely get my own debut album, State With the Arts, out now all over the place music is sold (and saved for free, haha) Also, be on the lookout for the upcoming cover undertaking I have with 1-O.A.Okay., as well as a soul project known as the Champagne Room! I like to drop random material from time to time so be on constant watch…

The revolutionary essence regarding Afrobeat music is rooted deeply in the Kuti family legacy. Today we were thrilled to web host Femi Kuti, the eldest son of Fela Kuti, for a live set of songs that continues his father’s musical legacy — combining potent social messages with an unstoppable funky appear.

KCRW DJ Jeremy Sole, who will be beginning Femi’s show at the El Rey tonight having a DJ set, interviewed the actual master musician about his / her influences from childhood around today. Femi said he accustomed to compete with his sisters upon who could memorize as well as dance to their father’s music the very best. During their childhood, they were also influenced my American musicians like Michael Jackson along with the Temptations. Femi says he now draws inspiration, in part, off their artists remixing his songs.

“It’s one of several great feelings an artist might have, that people want to do things with your work,” said Femi, explaining that will hearing someone else’s take on their music influences him also, so it goes both ways.

I was thoroughly enjoying Nic Harcourt’s Sunday show last night. A case in point that I sat in the supermarket parking lot because I wouldn’t care to exit the vehicle while Blur’s “Tender” is playing (try driving close to to that one late at night when the windows are down. Pretty close to a spiritual experience).

Then, despite staring down a heap of CDs begging for my attention, I switched on the radio when I got back in the home and was treated to more fantastic picks, including a catchy rock track which sounded familiar but I couldn’t install it.

Sometimes good songs are like that, they seem instantly acquainted. It was soulful and rocking. I really couldn’t wait to hear it again the moment it was over.

After perusing the playlist, I figured out it had been The Fling. Not only are they one of Dangerbird Records newest signees, but they’re a local band!

These people list their hometown so long Beach and I realized where I actually may have heard that will song before – they were cracking open for Delta Spirit/Darker My Love with a tour earlier this year and I remember thinking how their music fit right in.  (The Chicago Weekly describes it as “Big Pink-meets-Black Hill country-gaze”.)

So maybe the familiarity point was a fluke. But it’s a REALLY solid song. Their album, “When your Madhouses Appear”, was released earlier this month and you can wager I’ll be trying to get my practical it.

And the soon after party? Well, according to steer singer Nic Offer, they have among the better around because keyboardist/sax player Allan Wilson gets control as DJ.

Now, they need to bring the party directly to you. The band plans on releasing a series of mixes this summer all around various festival/tour dates. The first, coming from Allan, is the Cabin Fever Combination which you can stream  below and download directly from the Soundcloud page.  Soulful, cool, and perfect for a weekend travel if you’re headed anywhere with regard to Memorial Day.

“Here’utes that mix that Allan did of stuff we’ve been jamming out to. It’s in the popular MP3 format. Allan deejayed a number of the funnest after-parties we’ve been to this year (ours) and his skills are really coming up. This is perfect to bump at tailgate parties before our show, or tent-side at the festivals this summer.”

The guys are generally originally from Sacramento and wished to pick a Cali station to premiere their first mix so we were happy to oblige. They will be back on the West Coastline for two shows in August – the Pacific Festival inside OC on August 13 and also Outside Lands on August Fourteen.

When I first saw them enjoy, I had no idea who they were however a friend convinced me to look as his +1. I had Never witnessed an LA crowd get down like that. It wasn’t with a rave — it was a rock venue and people were going crazy! I left sweaty via dancing with a huge laugh on my face.

We cherished their most recent album “Strange Weather conditions, Isn’t It” and “AM/FM” was the most performed track on KCRW at some part last year.

I found out about The Park when I was invited to DJ at their own weekly residency in San Francisco.

They were backing the lovely Alice Russell as well as I’ve been a fan of their tunes and fun live show ever since.

They’ve been touring with all the likes of Darondo, Nino Moschella, Freddie Gibbs and Wallpapers and returned to Los angeles a few weeks back under the name of Grillade (pronounced GREE-YAWD) and done at my weekly residency Soiled KICKS.

After the gig, on a frosty night,  we decided to do a stop motion video in support of their one “Belleville“.  We thought of many concepts while devouring each of our snacks in the  car en route to the actual 4th Street Bridge in Downtown LA.   We transpired to find an open store which sold balloons and figured “just how great would it be to have the go up actually pull the various music group members across LA at night and into the morning?”We shot till sunlight came up and you can see the outcomes below. It’s also my directorial first appearance!

My 1st conversation about was, obviously, how do you pronounce their brand on the radio?

I had clipped into the studio to find out whom it was, just as Jason had been pondering how he would definitely announce them. Some groups (I’m looking at you F*cked Up) make it REALLY hard to play their tunes on the radio.

is the undertaking of San Francisco-based producer Christopher Dexter Greenspan along with I’ve heard the band name was inspired by the sound a new ghost makes, which makes impression. It’s dark, haunting, atmospheric music – not as appealing as The XX and less intense when compared with Salem. It’s like a pot simmering extremely over a hot stove while never boiling over.

He released a 6-track EP last year on Tri-Angle Records and you can have a look at two of the tracks below. Keep an eye out for this one.

All girl group Stealing Sheep are from Liverpool (where the Beatles come from!) and combine here with a monitor to make you all warm on the inside. With succulent harmonies coupled with a refreshing analogue approach, these ladies know how to get your attention. There’s one thing quite hypnotic about this track.

Robbing Sheep – Shoot The Geese To Win by Reddish Deer Club Recordings

“Shoot The Wading birds To Win” is taken from their own debut EP, “What If The Lighting Went Out”, which was released this past year, on Red Deer Club. Their own second EP, “The Mountain Dogs”, has just been released. And arrangements are in place for their very first album. Watch this space (but press play 1st!).

They’re starting to cause a bit of a wake here in London. Gilles Peterson lately included this track in his much coveted All Invariably winners 2011 Pt 1 – their list of the best tracks of the season so far. They’ve recently completed an effective headlining tour and, with a summer time schedule of festival appearances in the UK and beyond, it’s fantastic to see their fan base develop.

Stealing Sheep are also as a result of the final two in The Individuals Music Awards, an independent music awards voted for with the public. The final is Summer 18th and there’s still time for it to vote. (I’m DJing at the after-party!).  

k.d. lang launched her most recent release “Sing it Loud”, using new band the Siss Increase Bang, in a series of little venues — but none more intimate than the show hosted through KCRW at legendary producer Frank Clearmountain’s Berkeley Street Studio, with an meeting conducted by Anne Litt. It’s way up now in the archives for all those to hear.

After k.deb.’s performance, Clearmountain – who has worked with everyone from The Rolling Stones in order to Bruce Springsteen & the E-Street Band – exclaimed “nights this way are the reason I got straight into this business.”

The Grammy Award-winning singer is known for her gorgeous voice which was on full display on this session, where she concentrated primarily on new material. Your camaraderie she has with her brand new bandmates in the Siss Boom Bang inform you this is a true collaboration. The lady told Anne how the band came together:

“The second everyone walked to the room, which happened to be This summer 4th weekend, it experienced like fireworks. It was palpable, the energy was so high, everyone fell immediately in love with each other. There was respect, there was communication, there was enjoyment and there was such enthusiasm for making music…and THIS music. We all didn’t even talk about this, everybody just gravitated towards the devices that they wanted to play along with three days, eight songs were recorded,” said lang.  “We wanted to make an unpretentious, joyful document that made people feel great.”k.d. also admitted that she discovered the bands she’s selected as openers for her tour through listening to KCRW, including LA news band The Belle Brigade, The Secret Siblings, and Teddy Thompson.

Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr’s debut complete isn’t coming out until June, however, you can get familiar with a bunch of their particular new songs by getting their live performance on KCRW, noted right before SXSW.

Quirky London quartet Lulu and the Lampshades are fast becoming hot property on the London enterprise for their infectious, folk-infused pop, improvised video clips and energetic live activities.  This off the cuff video motivated by the lead singer’s percussion class pretty much sums them up

As well as anyone that can play the percussion with yogurt pots instantly has my respect (they can play normal instruments way too). After the video going the viral and a signing to leading indie label Moshi Moshi data they are set for big things.
